Sad to see that the best photos in the world seem to document emotions that we fear and want to avoid. Why isn’t there a single photo showing happiness in this list? Is it because it is so rare or do we not see anything special in happiness anymore? Point to ponder….

Actually, don’t say no to war, say no to beliefs. War isn’t started because people don’t like peace, it is started because two sets of people have opposing view points on what they believe is the truth. If one person believes the land is rightfully theirs, and the other believes the exact opposite, there is no way peace can be achieved.

We’re all fucking animals. Fighting for resources is a part of life whether you are a single cell organism or a fucking monkey. We should give ourselves some credit for being able to feel compassion in the first place. The goal should not be to end all war (which is like saying we should try to rid the world of disease), but instead to reduce it. The sooner we realize that people are not all inherently good and that conflict is an inevitable part of life, the sooner we can start coming up with real solutions.

Why is it that every fucking ‘best photos of…’ list ever assembled is full of fucking depressing pictures that are supposed to move us or in some way instil a feeling of compassion or despair at the way the world is.
Wow, its a fucking dead baby, great, just the kind of picture i love looking at. Wow, some guy protesting something, good for him, i bet hardly anyone has any real understanding of what he stood for or how he truly felt. Am i supposed to feel in some way responsible and therefore guilty because i belong to the same species as the people who may have brought about the death of that child? Am i supposed to feel like i should go out and protest stuff in a vain attempt to change the world? Are these pictures designed to make me abhor myself for not taking action against the bad things in the world, and the human race at large for the horrible actions certain individuals are capable of?
fuck that, people just seem to rate all these photos so highly because they are examples of the human race at its worst. Wtf is up with that, are we that self-loathing as a people? if i ever assemble a list of the ‘best pictures of…’ im filling it with pictures Anne Hathaway, Aston Martin cars and fucking bunnies covered in candy floss and maple syrup. Everyone else can keep getting their jollies off looking at pictures of dead children or starving people or grieving widows and thinking about how it makes them feel, but i for one would rather focus on the good in the world and place significance and importance on the pictures and records of that instead of these dreadful, depressing images.

That is our Constitution, actually. Or if you had to pick a war, I’d probably go with the American Revolution. Wars since then though, at least those involving the US, have been about money and power. Anyone who thinks differently has something to gain or has been deceived.

Wars (except the Revolutionary one) don't grant us freedoms, the Constitution does. Defending it is one thing, creating a fake situation to start a war based on greed is another.]
I think these pics seem to bring us down to Earth… they’re moving.

Ford, the “shopped” quote is one originated by 4chan that will get posted on just about any image that’s on the internet, if one of them sees it. They don’t really that that these are photoshopped, nor does the claim have any origins in news sources at all. They just think they’re being funny.

There is some misunderstanding among certain people who posted here, saying that the last several wars fought by America were in the defense of freedom or Constitutional Liberties or free speech. Such folk are too ignorant to live.
It was all about certain people being able to more easily make a huge profit.

A “rick roll” nando? I mean really? C’mon man, there’s a time and a place… These are truly breathtaking moments that show us how uncivilized the human being still can be. As much as we might like to try and forget it, we are animals, animals who have the brain power to dream up more horrible, gruesome, and powerful ways of destroying our own kind. On the other hand we also have the capacity to use that for the betterment of our society, and I can only hope that more and more effort is put into that instead.

Sadly, lots of people still think that PEACE can only be achived with war…. what a waste of time…. You could at least include some captions to explain which picture is about. And the title is completely wrong. These are not the best pictures, these are the most depressing ones. I am not saying we should ignore them, I’m just saying that there are better pictures shot during these 2 centuries.
Some of them represent moments that should be memorable to all humans. Looking at them should not make us feel sorry or bad, it should remind us our past so that we are prepared not to commit the same mistakes again.

first of all i’d like to say that this comment is not directed to these pictures, or the person who posted them. they are powerful images, and thank you for posting them. it opens the eyes doesn’t it.
benjamin is right on the money. and we’ve stopped a lot of horrifying issues with our troops. we’ve helped those countries who are unable to defend themselves. no war? you seem to have forgotten it just takes one person to disagree with another and with our technology that little argument becomes a giant argument. no nuclear arms? convince those foreign countries who would attack us the instant we put our guard down to “be nice to us”. have you forgotten 9/11? we would end up just like those countries if we didn’t defend ourselves, and do you know how we do that? right, with the government and those troops who are defending our country every day while you sit on your couch and blame them for it. you’re the same people who blame the president for your child’s behavior, and society, the economy, i could go on forever. you’re the same people who hold up those signs for peace to the wrong people. my point is, many need to rethink war and blame. and if you get offended by this comment, you’re exactly who i’m directing this to.

All of the moments captured in the pictures resulted from the greed of man. I’m not ashamed to be a human

War is a terrible thing and you will not get a lot of good out of it. The only war a man should fight is with himself, we need to teach ourselves to accept others, we need to teach our children to do the same and in time all of this will just be a sad tale.
The powers controlling the world can’t do anything without our support and blind obedience, we must open our eyes and understand that our destiny is in our hands, nobody should force us to harm another human being.
