It’s considered that rugby was created in 1823 when William Ellis took a ball in his hands. However, there was no strict rules for a long time, and teams just decided about it before every game. The English Football Association was founded in 1863, and taking ball in hands became restricted. So, that’s how football (soccer) and rugby became separate.
