Held at the prestigious Palais des Festivals, Cannes, between the 21st and 25th April 2008, The Sony World Photography Awards proudly give tribute to photographers around the globe in all categories. From landscape to music, photojournalism to fashion, the Sony World Photography Awards showcases the world’s best images taken by the most renowned photographers as well as the yet undiscovered.

Supported by hundreds of the industry’s top photographers, critics, gallery owners, directors, founders and other industry experts, SWPA is the first awards show of its kind, providing an unprecedented international platform in the culturally important and diverse world of photography.

For Sony’s TV advert, they have flooded Miami with foam. The “Foam City” was created across several blocks of Miami using the world’s biggest foam machine, capable of producing 2 million litres a minute.

Streets, shops, car parks, trucks and people were all covered. The seven-day shoot involved a crew of 150… and an estimated 460 million litres of foam.

Who would build a house from just anything in the world. Here is an example – a bottle house built either as some art project or just for fun. Anyway, that’s crazy!

For Nick Veasey, artistic inspiration came from an unlikely source. While working as a photographer/designer for morning television in England, he was assigned the monotonous task of X-raying soda cans to determine which ones contained a winning code for a contest sponsored by Pepsi. After three days without a winner, he X-rayed his sneaker for kicks. Veasey recalls, “It was a great image and I thought �there’s something to this.’ It was one of those life-changing experiences. I just left behind everything else I was doing.”

Veasey spent the next three months working with scientists to refine his technique. He learned to gauge object density and structure by experimenting with a variety of materials including plastic, flowers, metals and people, taking the utmost care with his living subjects.

Some of the paintings of this Spanish artist Antonio Capel look so photorealistic that even a trained eye will need some time to realise that these are not photos! Amazing!

While some problems may look small and insignificant, these pictures remind us that caring about environment is a very important thing as these small problems may some day become enormous!

A so-called gadget “Tengu” is a new usb thing which sits by your computer making different faces according to its mood. However, it can also lip-sync to the music played on your computer which makes it look like it’s actually singing the songs that you are listening to. Watch the video inside, it’s absolute fun!

Refurbished by James Law Cybertecture International, Pacific Place Cinema is on the ground floor of the Pacific Place mall in the Queensway district on Hong Kong Island. The space use to be a two auditorium UA Pacific Place Cinema. The newly designed space houses 6 theaters, featuring a total of 599 seats. Pacific Place is considered “Asia’s most technologically-advanced cinema”, boasting Hong Kong’s best three-way SRD-EX audio system, and incorporating a bunch of never-seen before solutions.

Introducing Nardo Design’s new high-tech Digital Cutting Board that infuses a new lease of life into the kitchen cutting board. The cooking instructions are popped up on the integrated detachable LCD display, thereby leaving no space for the imperfection to the dish being cooked. It also gives you access to the downloaded recipes, in case you want to experiment with.

Orestad College is the new danish school, built around an open area that can be seen from almost every floor. It looks like a big mall. It offers fields of study in science, social science and human science. The purpose of the college is to realize the 2005 reform’s aims to strengthen and renew the student’s professional capabilities, to prepare the students better for university and to enhance the science aspect. The school has wireless internet everywhere and every student receives a free laptop. It even has some orange pillows for students to relax, talk and work on the computer.

This is the “Chinese Miracle Marlboro Phone” which looks exactly like a pack of Marlboro cigarettes. Not sure why this was done but there must be some explanation, I guess.

Here are some very beautiful shots of Tokyo at twilight as seen by a famous Japanese photographer Sato Shintaro. That’s what Mr. Shintaro writes on his page about these photos: “I take photographs of Tokyo townscape from emergency staircase of multi-tenant buildings and of apartment houses. Most of staircases are facing back streets, and it is interesting that the other side of Tokyo appears there. Townscape in the twilight looked from staircases, to which no one reaches as if it has slipped from everyday life, has so erotic appeal that I am fascinated by townscapes every time when I take photographs. I become aware that I do not know anything about the town in fact, although I always look at Tokyo townscape.”

“Euro RSCG Buenos Aires” advertising agency has created new ad prints for Sony PSP which look both creative and appealing. Let’s have a look.

Louise Bourgeois is regarded as one of the most important artists working today. Born in 1911 in Paris, she studied under Léger, André Lhôte and Roger Bissière in the 1930s before moving to New York in 1938. Bourgeois has always been at the forefront of new developments in art, but has pursued a wholly personal path, removed from the major avant-garde movements of her time. She has explored her ideas in painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation and performance, using extraordinarily varied media from wood and stone to latex and rubber. However, this breadth of materials is balanced by an almost obsessive continuity of subject matter, often deeply autobiographical in its references to Bourgeois’ childhood. (Tate Modern)

A retrospective by Louise Bourgeois which is now open in Paris contains 200 works of this famous artist including sculptures, art, images and different objects. This exhibition shows that art is the only thing which can live forever.
